You can. If you went to USMC basic you are not required to go to another service basic. You will still have to meet the age requirements and the physical requirements as well as turn in your DD214 to the recruiter. Have fun

The service you join will compare your old rank and MOS to the new one you selected. Sometimes you may be reduced one rank but I have not seen more then that.

If you go from the Marines or Army to Air Force or Navy, you do not have to do basic over.

If you go from Air Force or Navy to Army or Marines, you have to do basic again.

Air Force usually reduced one rank unless the MOS is the same in both branches. I do not know for certain what the Navy does.

Also, if you had a 5 year break in service, the Army and Marines will make you do basic over, even if you were a Soldier or Marine before, but you can keep your rank.

Only the Marines make prior service members go thru Boot all over again.

Each of the other services, have short transition courses you go thru.

Where they basicly issue uniforms, process the paperwork and tell you about the rank structure and service customs, plus do your PT test.

But if you have been out of the military for more than three years, you do basic again in all the services, except for the one you were prior service in.

Rank retention, is based on how long you have been out of the service, and if your gonna be doing an equilivent MOS in the new service.

Generally, as long as your gonna be doing the same type of job, you keep your rank E-5 and below.

If you have been out longer than three years, or are training for a completely new job, you will probally lose a stripe.

There are no hard and fast rules, in most cases, it is determined on a case by case basis.

Even the marines, who make most prior service enlist as an E-2,

Will let people with specalized skills they need, enlist at a higher rank.

I have a mentor who is a marine. he is always telling me how the marines have the hardest basic training out of all the Non-special operation branches. he saiid that if you took USMC boot camp then you could get into any other branch without taking thier basic training.
