I recently was watching Animal Precinct or something similar on Animal Planet and the ASPCA was given a call that there had been a puppy that was hit by a car. When they got there, there was a man trying to bandage her leg, which was the only thing that was hit. They talked with him a bit, and the man said that he was the puppy's owner couldn't pay for the vet bills anymore. The ASPCA did the right thing by taking the puppy out of his custody, but the man was heartbroken. He hesitated, but knew it was best for his puppy. The allowed him to say goodbye, and he put her in the van, he was tearing a bit and the puppy very was affectionate toward the man and licked his face goodbye. After the cage door was shut and the van door was about to close, he says, "Don't forget, I love you." And he slowly walked away and watched the van drive away. This made me cry so hard. Any thoughts on this?

Was it a homeless man? If it was,I saw that episode, and I thought that they should have treated the dog for him,and then given it back,as it was all he had in the world. He seemed to really love the dog,and it looked well-fed.He looked so depressed as he walked away. Just because someone is homeless or doesn't have a lot of money, doesn't mean that they can't love their pet,and the animal welfare agencies should recognize this and help them without taking their animals from them.

I was starting to cry by reading it. That is very sad, but the ASPCA was only doing their job. If the puppy was hurt and the owner couldn't take care of her, the ASPCA had to step in and do what is right for the puppy. I think that all animal businessed need to work with the owner so they don't have to give up their animals. I know that I am living in a fantasy world, but that is what I believe.

Yes, that one hurt, but the poor dog needed to be taken away for treatment. The thing is, if after surgery they had returned the dog to his owner, who is to say the same thing might not happen again? The man was totally irresponsible letting that little one run free so close to traffic. He could have been hurt too.
One thing about these programmes which really gets to me is the way they put down dogs which are "food agressive", even if they are perfect in every other way. A dog who has had to fight for anything he can get to eat is obviosly going to be wary, especially the way they do it. I have taken in many rescue dogs who were food agressive, and with love, patience, understanding and a BIT OF COMMON SENSE they have all come good. In my opinion the ASPCA have wrongly taken the lives of these dogs without giving them a proper chance.

Having a pet is a responsibility. The man was not showing responsibility. How in the name of GOD did this puppy find his way out into the street? A puppy must be watched. The man was the one who made the mistake. This guy might be legally cited for not doing what he should have done- namely
KEEP THE PUPPY OUT OF DANGER.
Hopefully the puppy was able to find a safe home. There is no way to know.

yes, I watch it all the time.. not only is it sad.. but it is so rewarding to watch it as well..

Like u said at the time the man did make the right choice at the time..
we have to make sacrifices in this world.. for the things, and/or people,
we love..

I will think of u when I watch the show in the future.. I cry tooo sometimes..
U wonder how people could be so cruel in some of the cases.. ???
U will make a good parent, u r very compassionate..

yes it is very sad

We have dog insurance over here in australia just in case our dogs need an operation not for routine vet checks but not a lot of people know about it.

The rspca will still remove an animal if isn't getting its basic needs met or if owners are cruel but that story sounds like an awful accident I cant imagine anything like that happening here..poor man, poor dog

Life is sad.. But the truth of it is, if he can't afford the care, then he shouldn't have a dog. If you merely bandage a leg of a dog hit by a car.. Well gangarene will set in. That's fair to the dog, to leave him in a situation where he isn't properly cared for?

omg that is wayyyy too sad..why didnt the person who hit the puppy pay for his med. bills!!
Actually come to think of it..why was the pup out in the street??
I dont know I think it was the best because when my puppy is sick the last thing I think about is the vet bills! Why because my love for him is so big that at that moment all I care about is for him to be healthy no matter how broke I am no matter how many bills I have to pay, Having a pet is a big responsibility and when they are hurt or sick one must NOT ignore it! And theres vets out there that will work out a payment plan like mine.

Yes it does, and one I watched tonight on animal planet where this guy used a rubber band to keep a poodles mouth shut. He left it on so long it cut into poodles muzzle and had to have surgery to remove it and numerous stitches. He did not own it his girlfriend did. They arrested the b-----d.

Yup! That's why rescues don't adopt out dog to low income families, yet people whine and cry about rescues being too strict. Well, that is why! The man did the right thing, but at the same time, what would he have done if the Animal Control officers had not shown up when they did? He would have bandaged the dog's leg and called it good, leaving the dog to suffer.
The sad thing is that this happens all the time, but nobody hears of it and the dog never gets help. How much does someone really love their pet, when they get a pet knowing they can't afford vet care in an emergency??
See, everyone's instinct is to cry for that poor owner, but in reality, it is the owner's fault! It's the owner's fault that the dog was hit, and it's the owner's fault for having a dog he can't afford to care for.

And to the first answerer: NO the driver of the car would NOT be responsible for the vet bills. If a dog is running loose and darts out in front of your car and you hit it, how is that your fault? It is the owner's fault 100% for allowing his dog to get hit.
