If he existed, he was just a man. Period.

ADDENDUM

Morganie_xo: Your evidence that is not worth the keystrokes it took to paste it in. You have not cited a single contemporaneous account nor a single eyewitness account. "so-called" is hardly a rousing endorsement in any case. Hearsay, even 1900 years old, is still hearsay.

Jesus: even if this was a person (and there is considerable reason to doubt his actual existence), he was a mortal person. He was not the son of god, for the simple reason that no person can have such a status. Remember: god is an imaginary construct.

Savior: There is no such thing in a supernatural sense. However, in a real-world sense this term can have a great deal of meaning. For example, I may consider my mother my savior, since she has been so loving towards me, even perhaps when I didn't deserve it. Or perhaps a mentor can be a savior if he helps me land a job when I'm broke.

I realize that many people probably find the above statement to be blasphemous. But atheists are not afraid of nonsense. We are concerned however when believers believe nonsense so much that they feel everyone else should somehow also believe. Then it's a problem.

(I'm saying this with all due respect and politeness.)

To Morgani and others who offer the sources that claim historical proof of Jesus: Yes, there are some, but surprisingly few sources. And many of these, especially the all-too-critical comments from Josephus are particularly in doubt. Some evidence suggests that these references are even forgeries. See one source below:

- I think Jesus probably never even existed at all, but if there is a historical shred to the Biblical legends, Jesus was just an ordinary man

- no, he isn't a savior of any kind. If he existed at all, he's long since dead.

- he might have been a man, but more likely a fictional character

For Morganie : Notice that all your accounts that Jesus existed were from historians who were born many years after the death of Jesus . Their comments are second hand , folklore .And in fact their descriptions of Jesus are not all that flattering :e.g. " practiced scorcery and ...led Israel astray " .
Josephus was a contemporary, but you will notice his brief passage about Jesus makes the point that this is information that the disciples of Jesus reported and that Josephus himself doubts the information about this "so-called Christ" to be true .
There is also some evidence that this passage may be a forgery .

I don't believe Jesus ever existed. Although a person can make a case either way, no one can no for sure. Whether he existed or not he was definitely not the son and God and the story is greatly exaggerated.
I believe that the story of Jesus Christ and his attributes comes from the pagan God Horus.

While the evidence of his existence is still open to question, it's fairly clear that Jesus was a product of his environment and hardly unique. Had it not been for Paul's dynamism, it's quite likely that Christianity would have died out with the apostles.

And there's way that a person who lived & died 2000 years ago can have more than a passing influence on me. Or quite frankly, on you.

I think he was a man that was probably delusional in some way. Lot's of people are delusional and claim to talk to God or to have been visited by God. Jesus just so happened to be a really good speaker and got a lot of people to follow him. I think the accounts of his miracles are just myths. There are myths about a lot of people through out history. For example, there's an ancient Japanese samurai that supposedly sank a ship with a single arrow shot. Did it really happen? Probably not. The guy was probably really good with a bow and arrow and over time his fame turned into made-up myths about him. I think it's the same thing with Jesus.

As for what Christianity claims about Jesus, I don't even think it makes sense. If Jesus was God, why would God need to go through this whole ordeal of coming to earth in human form and getting killed in order for people to be saved from hell? God is the one who decides who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. So if God wanted people to be "saved", all he'd have to do it NOT send people to hell. If God is all-powerful and makes all the rules, then God would have no reason to go through rituals and sacrifices and stuff to makes things happen. Plus, if having "Jesus in your heart" is a requirement for getting into heaven, then what about all the billions of people that have lived since the time of Jesus that lived in parts of the world where they never heard of him? Why would God make this big sacrifice occur all in this one area of the world and make it a requirement that everyone "knows" Jesus? That's not exactly fair to all the people that lived in China and the Americas.

If I don't believe in god, why would I believe that someone who has been dead for 2,000 years was 1) the son of god and 2) my personal savior?

the bible is written the same way that naustodamus wrote prophecy... this man has yet to be heard of.. he is just a man but by mystifying him the devil intends to mislead him enough to get him killed before he could be heard... the problem with prophecy is that it never turns out the way we expect especially when there is someone trying to manipulate the outcome... that is another man in the spirit refered to as the devil who knows the prophecies and how to manipulate them... when this man gets to write his books... he was born in about 1973... he will have the knowlege to explain all the missing information that through the religions and churches of the world the deceiver has been hiding... that is why when information such as scientific explanations come out without religious permission the christians and catholics jump on the denial band wagon... they seek to discredit information before it's entirety has been disclosed... this man will have the details that would destroy the credibility of the churches... by now he knows he's a target...
