I have two burners - a Samsung and a Dell.
Both burners require that in order to save data files on a CD, the user must use CD/RWs and they must first be formatted with the software that powers the burner.
With Samsung, it is Nero. With the Dell, it is Roxio.

I used CD/RWs for backups until flashdrives became available. They hold so much more, don't have to be formatted, easily transported, and the price has come way down.

Do you have two cd-rom drives, one being the burner? Is it E:? If not, perhaps your computer isn't 'reading' your cdrom burner drive, due to conflict, or corrupted driver files. How about going to,(WinXP), Start>Right-click on My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager>click on the + sign next to CDROM>and then right-click on the actual cdrom burner's name>Properties>Driver>Update Driver

first, you need a cd-rw drive not just a cd-rom drive in your machine. open "my computer" and see if your optical drive says cd-rw and not cd-rom. you also need a burning software (one is usually included in the -rw drive). install the software and run it and make a "data cd" or something similar.
