Sure, communism and socialism are evil, but do you ever miss the excitement and intrigue of the Cold War? How about the propaganda via shortwave broadcasts? Checkpoint Charlie? Spetsnaz? Spy stories? I'm not trying to belittle the sufferings and evil; just marvelling at how interesting it all was. The Warsaw Pact militaries had reached an amazing level of power and skill; they would have been a formidable opponent to the West if WWIII had broken out.

Not one bit.

The propaganda wasn't just on shortwave radio, in was in every newscast in the US too.

I would think of it this way and no disrespect intended, if you were a true christian you have had even more amazing memories than you do now. But that is just Guess work here. How do you know if you missed out or not, you stopped following the path, who knows what riches were on that path for you to find. We each have our own path to take and I think the one that ends with the lord is a good one. This life is a short one and the things of which you speak end in a heart beat, but once with the lord it is forever, so do you miss out because of religion, I don't think so.

You talking about the 9 Soviet Divisions facing West Germany? Held in check by the 14th ACR, Followed by the 11th ACR. These 3 battalions were the front line at Fulda. The 3rd Armored was behind them. There were 2 infantry Divisions further back and I think the 1st Armored, maybe it was the 2nd was south towards Munich. That's 9 to 4. V Corps did have it's own assets, some artillery and birds.

US Armor was out numbered 10 to 1.

I was at Fliegerhorst Kaserne. NATO site 5 was there. there was something like 100 tacticle nukes. A mix of 8" artillary rounds and charges for the Engineers to blow big chunks of road away. They were dial a yield. I have read from .5 kilotons to 40. 40 is twice as big as Hiroshima.

Nukes Nukes Nukes. That's what kept them out.

Don't miss it at all. Have never lived far enough away from SF to avoid the blast over Treasure Island when it was 12th Naval Dist. HQ.

I met a guy that walked over 600 miles with an older brother to escape the USSR. Another guy escaped Hungary in 1957. Not sure how but he had to do it in the dark and hide in daylite. Worked with a young guy that walked 200 miles thru Yugoslavia and made it to Italy. Was involved with a Vietnamese woman for 6 years that ended up drifting on a ship for several days before it ran aground on a reef off a small island belonging to Malaysia. Her niece loved VietNam so much she walked thru Cambodia to Thailand when she was 12, by herself. Viva communism?... I think not!

I sure am not missing any of it. I believe we lost many lives over a concept that never flew.
Note- Communism never did exist never will. There are always those who have more and those who have less. Those who have money and are entitled and those who are poor and downtrodden.

In peace & war we just change the names & faces- the terms & the lingo.

The more the world changes the more it stays the same.

It is just a book in another cover.

I don't think there will never be a time without war.

There are things in the world that we don't understand.
War is one of them. Sometimes it is a necessary evil.

No, I do not miss the Cold War, and I detest Communism, but I will have to say this: in many places, the Communist government kept the Islamic pigs in place. Now that there is no one to restrain them, they are continuing their effort to destroy Western civilization, which has been going on since 700 A.D. Unfortunately, our President is too stupid or fearful to recognize the threat. He thinks Islam is a "religion of peace" and that it has been "hijacked" by extremists. If that is so, name at least one country that is dominated by fundamentalist Muslims and that is also a democracy. Hint: There aren't any, because Islam and democracy are fundamentally incompatible and cannot coexist with each other.

Actually the balance of global power was a good thing and essential for peace. I do miss peace. We probably didn't knwo it, but the fact that the two super powers kept each other honest (at least pretty honest) when it came to foreign affairs actually ended up being a promoter of peace.
