Doesn't that go against the very definition of "athiest"?

Well first of all, you don' have to be spiritual to be religious. They are two seperate things that can be intertwinned together sometimes, but not neccessarily always.

Athiests don't believe there is a god. So if they say they believe in some sort of deity, than they probably don't know what an athiest is. They are probably agnostic. This is someone who isn't sure there is a god, but open to the realization that there just might be.

Being an atheist doesn't mean a person had a hard line belief. Not all atheists feel the same way. They just open to more than what is said in church. Some are spiritual, some are aren't at all. Atheists are the most open minded people you'll meet, they aren't forced to follow a code in life.

People can be spiritual without it involving gods. The one thing I can say you are wrong on is the "some sort of deity" part...no atheist believes in any deities, that is the pure meaning of the word. If they do, then they are not an atheist.

Meditation is a way in which an Atheist may be spiritual. Meditation does not require any particular religious belief to be worthwhile and effective. And most schools of Buddhism are fairly non-theistic. A spiritual Atheist might feel right at home in Buddhism.

Belief in a deity goes against atheism, but spirituality does not. I consider myself an atheist, and spiritual, but I do not believe in a God of any kind.

Atheism has nothing to do with spirituality or lack thereof. Believing in a deity directly contradicts the concept of atheism, however, and I've never heard any atheist say they believed in a God (without it being a joke).

Atheists can be spiritual in that they may believe in a life force or something metaphysical but it is not a deity. Spirituality does not in itself imply any sort of belief in a deity but merely a belief in a spirit or intangible life force.

Some atheists are spiritual, but none believe in deities by definition.

spirituality is seperate from "god"
the only "deity" that an atheist could believe in is the universal mind which isn't a deity but it is but it is us but it is nothing but it is everything. lol. i won't even bother trying to explain how you can believe in the universal mind and be an atheist. i keep going in circles.

lmao that's funny. An atheist believing in 'some sort of deity of some type.'

Spiritual doesn't mean deity. Spiritual could mean you are in sync with nature, you know?
