the weapon that is in my pockets at all time. it's very nasty and still oh so silly. A sugar cube. The cristals of the sugar cut like a razor and the reaction of the sugar with your blood is sure to leave a scar. It's very easy to conceal and let's be honest what cop is gonna confiscate a cube of sugar. In a street situation its the simple weapons that make the most effective ones Another good one is a boosted lighter a few inches of flame in some ones face is usually enough to make any body deter from going further

Let me preface my answer by saying that active awareness of your surroundings (what I call 'tactical awareness') can generally prevent such surprise attacks before they happen.

That said, I used to be a police officer. Even when off duty I carried a handgun and a telescoping baton. Even if so armed (I don't walk around armed like that every day anymore), if I was attacked suddenly, my first weapon would be my hands and feet. In a sudden attack there is simply no time to employ anything else.

For example, experiments have shown that a man wielding a knife can close the distance and attack an experienced person with a gun before they can draw and put rounds on target from and average distance of 21 feet.

In a real attack, things happen fast and the first priority is to either subdue your opponent or escape as quickly as possible.

Therefore, I might employ a weapon later in such a confrontation (after making space, for example) but being able to engage in hand to hand, close quarters combat is the key to survival in an attack 'out of nowhere.'

A tazer...then my foot on their head. But in all seriousness, your keys would probably be the closest weapon. If you carry pepper spray on your key chain that might help. A car key to the eye will stop alot of people, but not taking the chance of being attacked is the best bet. Be aware of your surroundings, if your worried get someone to go with you, use common sense. Anything can be used as a weapon, ink pen, keys, even a paper clip. Being aware and not giving them a chance is the best defense. Or get a gun.

I believe the only reason to use a weapon is if your forced to.

If someone attacked me without a weapon, i wouldn't want to use a weapon. it would get in the way while im trying to neutralize the threat and escape.

also, weapons kill people, if your life isnt actually in danger and you kill someone you will probably pay a hefty price for it, jail time, revenge, spiritual guilt, etc etc....

if someone was attacking me with a weapon, a spear or a staff would do fine.

if it was a battle i would have a spear, a sword, a shield and a short knife : )

My hands.
Why? Because I'm not in the habit of carrying weapons around with me.

What I'd do with them? Depends on the type of attack and how much time I had to react. My first concern would be to get this guy the hell away from me, so my first reflex would probably be simply a downward cut which simply aims at putting someone off balance, in the hope it will give me time to think.

Since you are giving me a choice I would use a million volt tazer (which they sell for about 50 bucks), since it takes no skill to use and works on any size person under any "chemical" conditions (drugs, adrenaline, etc.). Furthermore, it works from almost any point of contact on the body and works through several layers of clothing, even leather. It incapacitates the victim non-lethally, and saves me from a lengthy court battle, and possible jail-time, over why I Killed or seriously injured him with my: gun, knife, kali stick, bat, baton, etc.
Unfortunately, I cannot fit a tazer into my pocket so I carry a pocket knife, and were this to happen to me for real I would use that weapon out of necessity and training I have with the weapon.

I just read PTBeast's response and he is right, I've researched that as well. So I would first try to land a blow or escape long enough to fish out my tazer and then employ it.

If they attack you out of nowhere you probably won't be carrying a weapon... so I'd have to say my fist upside his head. But if you did happen to plan on randomly getting jumped that day by somebody, it would probably be most useful to have some kind of machine gun or grenade. The reason for why is that nobody really wants to mess with somebody with a machine gun or a grenade. And another plus is that grenade might possibly fit in your pocket

Him
I would use him against him.
From the Start to the Finish. First as a fist fight for life, then in court as a legal criminal, then in a civil for a finanical gain from having to deal with some a hole in the first place. Today being patient and having money for an attorney can take even the smallest person far. And having muscles and or an ability to harm can make you broke and in prison.

The truth is I've done all these years of training keeping one thing in mind :
"This is with me at all times - No one can take this away"
If attacked I would use the weapons I have with me at all times.

Probably my fists. I generally don't carry guns or knives with me everywhere because I make it a point to avoid places where I may have to engage in a shootout or knife fight with someone. That said, My first move would be to hit them hard as humanly possible in the face or the groin and then employ the NIKE defense (read: Get myself the hell outta there as fast as I can).

Self defense is not about winning anything it's about getting yourself out of a dangerous situation fast and with minimal injury or legal repercussions.
