I can only assume that it was taken as insincere, as mockery.

Is he just your best friend or is he also your creator, father and judge? Is he the man/God that you'll face one day and have to give an account too? If you believe he is all that also you may want to make yourself clear. Some people say Jesus is their bud but he is not a judge because that would be mean. What you are doing in that case is making your own Jesus that isn't real. I hope though you just are not being clear.

If you're not a Christian, then you are obviously mocking Christians with that statement. If you are a Christian, well, you still sound like you're making fun of your relationship with Jesus, but if He really is your "bestest" friend, then it wasn't meant to be disrespectful, and they probably just misunderstood you. These things happen.

People have different ways of talking about their faith, even different traditions and vocabulary. Maybe this person was coming from the point of view that God is majestic and awe-inspiring, not to be domesticated with earthly relationships, like buddies. I don't think this is being fair to you, however, because it seems you are offended by her outburst. Christians should be aware of how other Christians live out their faith and Scripture commands us to be sensitive to this.
I'm An Atheist, is there any meaning behind your answer other than the intent to cause offense? How ironic and self-fulfilling of you.

Did you tell that person you were their best friend?
According to some creeds, including Catholic, Jesus is incomprehensible, all mystic, everywhere yet nowhere. To admit to being his best friend is to say that you can understand him when athanasian creed states that this is impossible.
So the Father is God, the Son God, and the Holy Spirit God; and yet not three Gods but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord; and yet not three Lords but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by Christian truth to acknowledge every Person by Himself to be both God and Lord; so are we forbidden by the Catholic religion to say, there be three Gods or three Lords.
The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and the Son, not made nor created nor begotten but proceeding. So there is one Father not three Fathers, one Son not three Sons, and Holy Spirit not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less, but the whole three Persons are coeternal together and coequal.
Is god really human or relateable according to this?

I've heard Christians refer to Jesus as their best friend and lover so I don't see how bestest is offensive.

Jesus is your friend, I don't know what your friend was thinking. Jesus is the best friend you could ever have! Read this,
John 15:15
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend (Jesus) that sticketh closer than a brother.
I hope this helps.

The person who probably got pissed sounded like a hardcore fundie. They take everything about God and Jesus too seriously. I've heard it a lot of times where people depict Jesus as a best friend.

There was nothing wrong with saying that; you obviously meant it sincerely. Your Christian friends need to be less stuffy! I doubt that Jesus would be offended by your words; most likely he would be pleased. By the way, if God had no sense of humor (or light-heartedness), neither would we!

Jesus Christ is more than friend the proverb said he is mean the God friend more than the brother
but if you put the God in the same degree of the friends now its wrong, and not logic.
because many friends now and you see them in the public areas with bad behavior.
so God not like them He is the creator and all of us want him, to be in our life ..
