Pre School programs in public school are free, your tax dollars pay for the program. Most programs ask that a child turn 4 before a certain date. For example in the state of Washington it's 4 by sometime in July, in Arizona it's 4 by sometime in September and in California it's 4 by Dec. 2. Your son will start in September and continue through June along with all the other elementary school children. I am not sure what the cut off date is for Louisiana. Call your local elementary school and ask.

Well I taught Pre k in Texas for 3 years. They had to be 4 by august to start. It was free, but limited to kids who's parents had a very low income. More for kids from poor homes. When i taught in Louisiana, Pre K was for kids with learning disabilities. It has changed since i have left teaching. But i can tell you Pre K is good for kids. It helps with preparing them for K. Teaches them social skills also, not just learning skills. If i were you i would enroll him in Pre-K.

my 4 year old is in UPK (universal pre kindergarten) which is free for us, but they run in from a state grant, when my daughter went to upk I had to pay for it, but it wasn't in a public school. 4 is the proper age for pre-k, and I wouldn't think if you would have to pay for it because if it's in the public school with other grades, it's been approved by the state, and is probably already funded by them.

If you are a stay at home mother, or even if you are not, you can get better help for your child as far as the basic alphabet and reading by going to starfall.com than any public school. Every one I have recommended that to has told me how much it helped their child.
