listen to don m . this will help security on the net but depends on what you download as some can be over-rided by you , the operator of your machine. it is up to you to keep it up to date. and you do need to download the updated internet explorer to your machine. your best bet is to have a friend nerd/geek like me that is able to physically fix the computer.
shouldn't take more than a few bags of cheetoes, or a pizza.

in ie7 click the advance tab
click restore defaults
tick the instruction to empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache)
bullet disable phishing

now all you need is good internet security and antispyware

i run the following with no problem
norton 360 and superantispyware

if you want a clean up run this windows live program

Clean up pc and IE
==============
To clean up run this Microsoft’s windows live program. It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

it takes 2 hours or more so once it starts to scan (go to bed etc)

XP Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/defau...

Vista Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/cente...

Run the full scanner, then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

This may or maynot help in your case, but I ahd the exact same issue, and the way I fixed it.
I ran the Disc Cleanup option from the SYSTEM TOOLS.
I downloaded and ran Spybots' Search and Destroy.
Likewise with the Lavasoft's Adaware2007
I restarted my computer and all was back to NORMAL.
