any gun in the wrong hands is dangerous I applaud you for supporting your second amendment right but to answer your question a revolver is a very safe gun the hammer is tight and won't just pull back but i suggest you buy a high quality American made one those cheap chinese knockoffs might pose a problem learn how to handle the gun and you will have no problems

Modern revolvers are as safe as the handler. Of course, you would never want to store a loaded revolver with the hammer already pulled back. You always want to be careful about dropping a loaded gun. Even the 1911 .45 acp with the dubious grip safety has been known to go off when accidentally dropped.

As far as the hammer getting caught on something, its usually the trigger you have to worry about. My favorite CCW gun is rapidly becoming my old Colt Detective Special because it is easy to conceal in an inside-the-pants holster, it is fairly light and comfortable to carry. Just find the right holster for you S & W, preferably one that covers the trigger, and you'll be okay so long as you practice good gun safety.

Good luck.

If you cock the hammer on any loaded gun and drop it it will most likely go off. I'd say that what you've been told has mostly to do with single action revolvers (six shooter type revolvers). Double action revolvers are the easiest handgun to use and the safest if you have the hammer uncocked. With a double action revolver, you just push the button forward on the left hand side to open the cylinder, tip the gun back, the rounds fall out of the gun, and then close the cylinder. Same thing when you clean it. Nothing to take apart. Everything is exposed for cleaning and you just clean the chambers of the cylinder, the inside of the frame that the cylinder sits in, clean the barrel, and the loading gate that holds the cylinder. Just a toothbrush, some solvent, some dry patches, and a cleaning jag. Easy as can be.

A modern double-action revolver is the safest handgun of all for novices. They need no safety catches. They can only be fired by cocking the hammer by hand and then pulling the trigger or by a long and heavy trigger pull, so nothing could be simpler and safer. Striking the hammer cannot fire one in good condition, for the trigger must be fully depressed to fire the gun. It is the old single-action revolvers that have such safety hazards. Many of the new ones are quite safe. Ruger makes good ones. For concealed carry, I use an S&W "Bodyguard" whose frame forms a hammer shroud, so the hammer cannot snag on clothing but can still be ****** for accurate single-action shooting.

Dear friend,
revolvers are some of the safest firearm out there, not only their are reliable but most important they are easy to operate.
Revolvers are very accurate and my personal choice for concealed carry.
If you are planing on using your Revolver for personal protection get a hammer-less model like the S&W Mod.342 in 38sp. or some newer models so you whon't have to worry about the hammer snaging on something...

If handled intelligently, double action revolvers are safer and more reliable than than any other handgun action.

Modern made DA revolvers have internal safeties that will prevent discharges when it is dropped, or if something strikes the hammer. Many designs also have a passive safety that prevents discharge UNLESS the trigger is pulled.

The two revolvers you linked are totally inappropriate for defense or concealed carry.

The M-617 is a fine target revolver, but the .22 LR cartridge lacks the power needed for defensive use. Yes, thousands of people have been killed by .22 LR firearms, but many of the people killed managed to take their killers with them. It simply lacks stopping power.

The M-500 on the other hand is way too powerful, and far too big for concealed carry. The .500 S&W Magnum is one of the most powerful commercial handgun cartridges available and is intended for hunting. Recoil is brutal, especially for a novice shooter. And the cartridge has way too much penetration to be safe for innocent bystanders in an urban area. If you want to go handgun hunting for large bears, the S&W M-500 will be near perfect, if you can handle it.

I do recommend that you purchase the M-617 as your first handgun. Ammo is cheap, the revolvers are well known for outstanding accuracy, and recoil is virtually non-existent. You can use the M-617 to learn proper gunhandling skills, proper sight picture, proper trigger control, and proper breath control. After you have mastered the M-617, you can step up to a good Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver, which is near perfect for concealed carry.

FWIW, I've never known a good shot who didn't start with a .22 LR rifle and handgun. The skills you learn with a .22 are easily transferable to more powerful firearms.

Good Shooting,

Revolvers are great guns but are clumsy and the trigger pull is way to hard for self defense as far as double action is concerned. Notice police all carry semi automatics now??? If you seriously want a gun that is double action without the clumsiness and limits of 6 shots then look up PARA ORDINANCE. They make all kinds of different pistols that fit the needs of the average person looking for protection. From small pistols to large. They have double action semi automatic pistols. That means that the first trigger pull is tight but then it slips into the semi automatic light pull after that. Not a hard and off target PULL of the trigger after. You get a smooth transition from the hard trigger pull to a sweet rhythm. With a revolver you have to pull on the trigger every time with your trigger finger. In an intense situation causing you to jerk off target, unless you have been trained with a revolver. There is a reason why cops don't carry revolvers!!!!!!!! Look up Para Ordinance. They received all kinds of accolades a while back! One of which was because the couldn't find anything wrong with their weapons after firing 1000 rounds through them.

anthony b. You are talking out of your @$$! You obviously know nothing about handguns much less guns in general! 1911 is a semi automatic not a revolver. 1911 is the style in which most semi-automatic pistols are modeled after!

There are two solutions if you are concerned about the hammer. the first is to buy a newer one. They have a device between the hammer and the firing pin that prevents the firing pin from being struck unless you actually pull the trigger. The other solution is to just leave one of the cylinders empty. This way if the hammer did drop it would hit the empty chamber!

Revolver GOOD! YES.The Smith & wesson 617 is a State of the Art ...TARGET Pistol in 22LR caliber. It should NOT even be remotely considered as a concealed weapon to carry or for personal defense. 22LR lacks the muzzle velocity, and bullet mass needed to be a good handgun for personal peotection. As far as safety is concerned, the lack of an actual safety, the concerns of the hammer being caught on clothing and the "Hearing it is the most dangerous handgun." is pure rubbish..It is just not true.,,

If you are looking for a carry handgun consider the 38 Special/357 Magnum Revolver or 9mm Semi Automatic handguns first...Smith & Wesson is the leader in REVOLVER quality and manufacture, with Ruger revolvers running a close 2nd followed by Taurus revolvers.....If given the chance go to your local Gun Shop or Distributor and see these handguns in person. The quality will be quite obvious. Ask the owners and clerks in these stores questions, and educate yourself in the differences before you make a purchase of ANY handgun.........Good Luck with whatever you choose..

i have never heard that a relvolver is the most dangerous. the auto is much more dangerous.just my opinion but s&w revolvers are absolutely the best on the market.now a auto is another story.they are very dangerous in the wrong person's hands.trhere are many brands. someone new needs to get one that is the safest and easistto take apart and clean. that would be the glock. they are ugly but the most depenable on the market.there is like only 4 parts..stick with a smith in a revolver and you will be fine.if just for home defense get a model 19.it bis a 357 but will shoot 38's/

There are stupid story's about every firearm. My opinion is that a revolver is probably the simplest and yet effective firearm for self-defense. With a semi-automatic handgun, if you are using it in an emergency situation and you pull the trigger and it misfires, eg you hear a click followed by the sensation of wetness in you pants, you have to drop the mag, and clear the slide, reinsert mag and charge the weapon again. With a revolver if you pull the trigger and nothing happens you just pull the trigger again, if its a newer weapon with newer ammo it will go bang at least one out of five or six. You can get a hammerless revolver if you want it to be more concealable. Frankly as for safety device don't touch the trigger unless you want something to die. Some disadvantages to a revolver is you can't throw out as much ammo, but I like accuracy over volume of fire and with practice you can reload a revolver almost as fast as you can an automatic. For its simplicity and reliability I would go with a revolver but then again two guns is better than one.
