i have a mongrel puppy who we think might be GSD mix.
he is now about 6-7 months old. when we found him he was about 3-4months old. we had him neutered pretty much right after we got him as he was quite agressive and there is no need to keep him intact as we don't want to breed him. but now i was thinking did he clip him too early as he doesn't lift his leg. my poodle mix is 5-6 months old and he is already lifting his leg but he is not neutered yet as he is just getting over an infection. will my neutered mongrel ever lift his leg with age or will he "do it the puppy" way forever?
thanks

It has nothing to do with being neutered.. Some males will never lift their leg. Some females will lift their leg. It all depends on the individual dog.. Usualy a more submissive male won't lift his leg, however a more dominant female will. There are some dogs who will lift their leg one day, not lift it the second day and go back to lifting it the third day. Theres nothing wrong if he doesn't lift his leg.

I have a male German Shepherd that got neutered when he was around 8 months old. One day he just rolled over and I noticed that his testicles had not descended.
Any way, for a long time he didn't lift his leg to pee. About a year ago he finally started to lift his leg. He has moments when he will lift his leg and moments when he doesn't lift his leg. It really doesn't matter to me. I love him for him!!!!
My male can be aggressive when the need arises, but he is basically a big (103 lbs) of love bug. He is a huge sweetheart!!!!!
By the way he just turned 5 years old this August.

Some male dogs never do. I've got a 10 y/o ridgie x mastiff- had him since 7 months old, got him neutered at 9 months, and he has never ****** his leg.

It's possible that he will copy the poodle, but yep, he may just "do it the puppy way" forever.

I'm afraid this is a classic example of how castration does NOT necessarily stop anything, other than being able to sire puppies. Fact is he was never house-trained and this is probably why he ended up needing to be rehomed. I seriously doubt he's marking his territory to be honest. He's just never been trained. So right now, no free access to the whole house. Crate him if you can't be there to supervise. No going into your bedroom, shut the door. And go right back to puppy training one. Take him outside every couple of hours - don't just let him wander in and out. I know it's difficult if you have other dogs, but it needs to be done with this one. Or crate him and take him out yourself regularly. You must stop this habit, which is what it is. Pugs are a tad stubborn, and I'd suggest he's taken the Pug side of his parents. So you will need to be patient, but firm. It's going to be a lot of work, but if you are to get him sorted out, it's going to have to be done. ps You might confirm this isn't a medical problem - collect a sample of his urine and have your vet check it for a UTI, or other kidney problem going on. There's no point trying to train him if he does have a medical problem.

My American Bulldog never figure out that he was supposed to lift his leg. He's almost two now. He still squats. I guess he always will. I think he was about 6 or 7 months when we fixed him. He had started to a couple of times, but just never got it all the way. I think some dogs just don't get it, unless maybe they're shown by another dog.

It's possible the mutt will begin to lift his leg just being around the Poodle that does it. Some males never lift their leg and believe me, it has nothing to do with whether they are neutered or not.

My 8 year old, neutered GSD never has lifted his leg. It's typical. It hasn't seemed to curb his aggression much either, although I guess it would be much worse if we hadn't done it at 6 months. He's completely intolerant of any other animals although he likes people. He's a real handful, but we love him and keep him firmly in hand.

He will lift his leg when he is ready. some times it takes a while for them to do it. I thought they had to watch other dogs to learn how to lift the leg, but that isn't true. My blind dog has just started lifting his leg and he is almost 3 yrs old. So just give the boy time and he will lift his leg. Beside what difference does it make it he doesn't lift his leg? LOL.

I have a 5 yr.old gsd who was neutered at 1 yr.
He did'nt lift his leg at all until he was 3 and our other gsd got old enough to do it.He still stretches out and squats down to go unless we're at the park and he's marking everything. After our other dog.
Personally,I'd rather neither one lifted their legs. The younger dog has killed several small trees and flowers lifting that leg.

Most male dogs do eventually learn to lift their leg to pee, neutered or not. Give your puppy a little more time and don't worry about it.
