As police represent safety, peace and the law in society, would it not make sense that a crooked officer should face harsher penalties than the average citizen if they violate the trust of society.

In your answer please state if you are a law enforcement officer or not.

They aren't for one reason and one reason only. There is a maximum and a minimum sentence for every crime. Yes I am in law enforcement.

It doesn't matter if I am a law enforcement officer or not if I know the law that matters also and yes! they should n they have u have crooked cops out there who have committed some heinous crimes as well just go back to the 70's as and example and the New Orleans, police department now they were a bad bunch of cops running drugs to prostitution to money laundering to kill ordinary citizens who got in there way or crossed them or they felt were about to drop a dime on them they were dead and I remember that because I grew up in that era n that was a big story all over the country when they finally did get busted and u ask should they get harsher punishment when they betray the public trust they r suppose to protect u damn right they should is that a good enough example n answer for u.

Typically you'll see the judge make a mention of the cop's employment during the sentencing...the betrayal of public trust etc. It's difficult to really ascertain whether cops get harsher penalties, as you would have to take 2 identical crimes, with the only difference between the criminal, one being a cop, the other not.

That said, I'm sure being a cop in prison is worse than for most criminals.

As for whether they should receive harsher penalties..I'm not sure what I think. My gut says yes...every dirty cop makes my job more difficult. But then do you expand this concept, so store clerks who shoplift get harsher sentences, or speeders who are commercial drivers lose their license on the first offense..etc

I'm not a cop and have only seen cops prosecuted for what we call major crimes. I've seen some of the things they do under the guise of justice and it is disgusting. Their claims of living up to a higher standard are for the most part a joke. There is little if any accountability for them. This should expand to include judges, lawyers, prosecutors and all who are in the law making and enforcement communities. Being a cop is no excuse for breaking the law and they should have a higher standard of sentencing. If ignorance of the law is no excuse that in turn says that knowing the law such as they do is far worse than the rest of the country. It is time for us to police the policing community.
