I can understand how some people might be a bit confronted by that but to me, it is just a part of your body. It is not like it was displayed in a sexual manner. There are probably many kids that watched it that remember breastfeeding, have a brother or sister that is breastfeeding or is still breastfeeding themselves. I think that once you start trying to hide things like that that's when they become risque
But like I said, I can understand how other people would disagree and a warning at the start probably would have been good for those people

I wouldn't have a problem with it as my kids see mine all the time. I'm breastfeeding my third and will cover up in public, but choose not to at home. They think breasts are for babies to eat from. If you didn't make a big deal of it at the time, this is probably what opion your children developed. I understand that other moms don't feel the same and they maybe could've had some type of written warning at the beginning of the show. When I'm feeding baby in public and kids ask to see baby, I tell them that baby is sleeping and needs privacy. It's up to their parents to explain any differently. I know some parents would be uncomfortable if I told the truth. I think that maybe the could have shown just the baby already latched on. That may have been accepted better by all parents. If you were bothered by this, write PBS a letter stating that that wasn't something you were comfortable with your children viewing. They won't change anything unless they're aware that some parents were offended by it. I don't judge parents for not being comfortable. I think it's a personal choice as to what we teach our children. However I did like the comment about the violence allowed on tv and how the natural act of breastfeeding stirs more reaction than our kids seeing the violence they do. I mean really, have you watched Tom and Jerry lately? I am surprised they had that on PBS though.

A woman openly breastfeeding on a childrens show?!! What nerve!!

So . . . their allowed to suckle for a few years/months or so and then it all of a sudden becomes indecent to even veiw the act?! That doesn't make any sense to me.

Breasts are not sex organs (they have no part in the act of sexual reproduction), and children don't need to be sheltered from the sight of a body part that they sucked on for food, you see?

I do like the idea of a warning though . . .

WARNING . . . You are about to see a breast!! . . . being used to feed!! If you find this inappropriate and/or offensive then . . . you have issues and should seek counseling!

No. What is the importance of showing a breast to explain to children the act of breast feeding? Most children would not need any graphic visual effect for this process. They would be satisfied with mommy feeds the baby or the baby is being nursed. What show was this? I donate a heck of a lot of money to PBS and usually their programming is wonderful and educational. What a shock for you I bet.

Well, I have a 3 year old, a 20 month old and a 6 month old, and when my youngest was born she spent a week in the NICU... well, it's kinda hard to hide a duel breast pump from a curious 3 yr old ( I tried for like, 15 seconds) so I gave up and told him it was milk for baby... he repeated what I said, I confirmed, yes it was milk for baby. He took that answer and went on about his merry way. Even now, when he shows interest in the baby feeding I tell him, "she's eating, it's milk for baby" he'll repeat me and go on about his business. If you don't make a big deal about it, neither will they. (But I still think you ought to cover up in public... that's just kinda.. awkward and uncomfortable, cause lets face it, there ARE men out there that are just a little rude.. and gross.. )

Some people here seem to be confusing the issue. While breastfeeding is totally ok to do in public, it is NOT ok to show people your breasts. Children that age don't yet understand the implications of societal expectations of modesty, or the gray areas of modesty-decorum that breastfeeding publicly strays into. For this reason, it is unappropriate to show the woman's breast on tv.

While breast feeding is natural I would not want my son to watch that on a children's show. The can use a blanket. They do not need to sow the breast. All they have to do is say that it is time for baby to eat.

They are only breasts,

We all have them...

I am in Canada and women here fought and won to be able to bear their breasts in public ...not that we all do, but we could if we wanted to, and not be arrested for indecency.

This is a quote from BARING OUR BREASTS by Oquawka (Janie Rezner)This article was written in September 2004. The author lives in California.

"The maternal breast is very political. It's about women taking back their own bodies---making birthing and nursing and feeding the norm, rather than war and death, whose images are an everyday occurrence for our growing children. Rather than honouring scenes of violence and the taking of life, how about honouring the scenes of the giving of life? Nurturing rather than warring!"

I must admit I am in full agreement of the above quote. We need to give kids credit...if you tell a toddler that the breast is used for feeding a baby, that is what they will believe. Not until we become sexual beings does it become naughty and dirty as some would believe....it is all a matter of perception.

I am a mother of 4 boys and yes I breast fed them all!!

it is a perfectly natural thing to see and do.. children do not have an opinion about the matter because they don't see anything wrong with it.. they learn about it later.. unfortunatly it is usually in a negative way.. there is nothing wrong with the truth.. and PBS is not afraid of showing the truth..

It's ridiculous that U.S. rules prohibit showing a naked breast on TV, but can air all the violent acts and language it wants.
