You got a lot of smart-alek and idiot answers! NO...you do not need a passport to fly within the U.S. You will need a photo I.d. You will also need your birth certificate for when you drive over the border. Good idea to get a passport soon as you will need it starting next summer.

since you have a lot of contradictory answers with no references, here's a link to passport Canada who says you currently don't need a passport to do it that way.

I can also tell you I have a coworker who drives down to Seattle then flies to Vegas a couple times a year. Her first ever passport application is sitting on her desk half filled in. She hasn't bothered to complete it as she wont need it for another 9 months or more.

Cheapest is driving. maps.google says it's 9-10 hours, 470-540 mi depending on the route chosen. Greyhound bus can get you from White River Jct VT (which is not all that far from Lebanon NH) to Toronto for as low as $93.28 one way (web fare) - I don't think you're going to beat that flying or on a train. Airfares differ based on date and how far in advance you book; I input LEB and YYZ into Travelocity and found roundtrip fares for $408 in early Sept.
