Maybe he really cares for you but doesn't wanna risk scaring you away by moving to fast, and doesn't wanna lose you by not showing you how much he really cares.(Guess it kinda depends on when you got divorced. How long the two of you have been together etc.)

Technically a promise ring is meant for the left hand ring finger because it signifies that you are in a commited relationship and will marry that person but it's not the right time.
There isn't a certain age where once you hit that age you are too old for a promise ring; however, it tends to be more common in younger couples. I understand where you are coming from so if you aren't comfortable wearing it on your left hand ring finger then talk to him and see about getting it resized to fit a different finger.

I think it is kind of sweet. However, I'd wear it on my right hand not my left. Also, what is the ring a "promise" for? Marriage? I would hope in his 40s a man has the gumption enough to just propose already! Don't settle for a promise ring if marriage is what you really want. It seems a promise ring at 40 would be used to string a woman along without making an actual committment. Please post more details...

I would consider having it sized to fit another finger. As far as too old, no. People use age to dictate boundaries. Do what your heart feels...you only have one life enjoy. I am sure part of you wants you to wear the promise ring because you have considered resizing it. At 44 i wish someone will give me a promise ring. Im waiting on a promise to come my way, so if your undecided send it to me..i will take it

In what context was the ring given to you? A promise of marriage? Commitment to work on developing the relationship further?
Talk to your boyfriend and say you'd like to get engaged. That doesn't obligate either of you to get married, but it confirms your intent, for yourselves and all those people that will ask questions, once they see that ring.

Who is the one that call the ring a promise ring? If he does it's his way of saying I like you okay, but I really don't want to get married. If you are calling it a promise ring than you are hoping to find love where it is not. I say dump him and find someone who does want to get married.

OMG your never too old for romance and special things, do you really care what other people say, or do you love and appreciate what the special man in your life feels? wear the ring proudly, and just say proudly it's a promise ring and when we make plans you'll be the first to know.
peace

You answered your own question. The promise ring is quite juvenile. To me it is saying he wants people to know you are taken, but he doesn't want the committment. Tell him to get down from his high horse and propose or move on. I definately would wear it as a gift on another finger.

Not juvenile but at your age do you just want promises? Either he knows you are the one or you aren't. It sounds like he is stalling for time. I would wear it on my little finger.
