Many years ago, early in my ministry, I wrote an article on the growth of the LDS for a leading theological journal. In the process of researching this article I read many of the documents of the Mormon religion including the "Book of Mormon", "Pearl of Great Price" and "Doctrine and Covenants". Personally I was shocked to see how far they have departed from the orthodox Christian faith. What I found in reading and researching the material and speaking to Mormons is.........http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-S6YMuFYyaa9ESBoW5DFwEjL_HhqA?p=116

Colbert Jr.,

Not exactly, it is because your conclusions are false and often create contradictions. Mormonism is the extreme extension of humanism to religion. Mormonism is a religion based on human reason instead of faith and is more akin to pagan Roman and Greek polytheistic religions than to Christianity. It is a religion based on the creativity of man rather than the revelation of God.

strong community
"family values"
exotic history and teachings(Nephites vrs Lamanites, Jesus in America,Temple rituals and secrecy)
active and zealous missionizing, outreach and proselytization
demands active participation and offers something every day but 'Family Day"

"Mormons help Mormons and we stick up for each other" a LDS friend of mine says.

However, LDS Mormonism is not Christian theologically(Many gods,Divine Eternal Progress, formerly human gods, a Scripture at least equal to the Bible, etc) though Mormonism is sociologically and culturally "American Protestant Puritan Christian Biblicist". Mormonisn is better labelled "Christo-Gnostic".

Dear Fs,
The Catholic Church (see Catechism of Catholic Chrch846-848 and Vatican II Lumen Gentium) does not damn those who do not know about Christ( and this is true for many Mainline Protestant groups)or who in conscience cannot believe the claime of the Savior. God's grace is great.

I read your blog and I was intrigued with your perspective on the Mormon religion. I have several friends who are Mormon and I have spent quite a bit of time discussing theology and spirituality with them. The funny thing about our discussions was that while they talked about faith, they did attempt to reasonably and logically explain things that really are not able to be reasonably and logically explained without having faith to begin with.

Contrary to what you wrote, I do believe that Mormons have faith but I think many fail to adequately express that faith and they feel like they need to appeal to people through logic instead of merely talking about faith and the spirit like most other Christians.

In addition, it seems like most sects of Christianity lead to pride, not just Mormonism. You mentioned that Mormons believe that their religion is the only one that can get people into heaven. Personally I fail to see how that is any different than any other Christian group. At least the Mormon's make exceptions for people who never had the opportunity to hear about Christ. So far I have never seen another Christian religion provide allowances like that for those who never had the chance to accept Christ. It seems like God would be incredibly unjust if he assigned people to a life completely devoid of Christ, then condemned them for not believing in him. Thanks for your blog, it was interesting!

Thanks Rev! I knew there was a reason I've always felt my faith was so much more rational than others and now you tell me that it is in fact such and the rationale is what drew me into it. You may just be the best Mormon Apologist yet!? hehe

God Bless!

I'm confused. Your reason that because we have better explanations to the mysteries of God we are false. Doesn't that seem backwards?

Because it is true. Read the Book of Mormon and pray about it as it directs and you will have your answer.
