Poe's work is generally a body of short stories and poems that explore the darker side of thr human condition. Doyle's work presents the human condition from all angles through his characters, both protagonistic and antagonistic. It's much more involving to the reader.

I like Sherlock Holmes better because it´s exciting and the language is so "vivid", it makes your brains work, you almost can "see" the text (like watching a movie). Edgar Allen Poe has written great books too, but I find them so "black, sad, horrible", perhaps you understand what I mean. Both Doyle and Allen Poe are great authors in their own genre.

I think the key is found in the phrase (which Holmes NEVER said ) "Elementary, my dear Watson."
Poe was about the really extraordinary. Take "The Cask of Amontillado." Now, how many people have you heard about who were bricked up behind a wall and left to die?
Holmes, on the other hand.... his entire method was simple observation and deduction, and the implication of everything he did was that anyone could do what he did, if they simply applied themselves.
Holmes is simply more relateable. People read Poe and think "Hoo! I'm glad that's not me!" but they read Doyle and think "I could DO that!"

i don't think that's true, i mean maybe sherlock holmes is mentioned more but edgar allan poe is more famous, like people would know the names of individual stories and poems instead of just thinking "sherlock holmes." also i like edgar allan poe better. especially the raven. ^_^
