Hi, I'm doing a high school "case study" project and I need to determine a diagnosis for my case. To make a long story short, my patient had a pH blood level test done and the results came back indicating it was high. What does that mean? Does that suggest an infection, or maybe cancer?

What causes a basic change in pH? (in the blood)

Changes in blood pH can result from respiratory conditions and breathing issues. The body wants to maintain a blood pH of about 7.4, so any higher than this can mean there is a change in the pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood, or it could be the result of lower blood lactate, which raises carbonic acid in the blood. Kind of confusing, but it's worse if the pH ends up being lowered.

All that pH indicates is a low or high acidity level. A high pH level means low acidity, low pH level means high acidity.

I dont think it leads to cancer or infection, and i'm sorry i can't answer the rest of your question.

High PH (normal 7.35-7.45)>7.45 in blood indicates that patient has alkalosis. it could be after prolong vomiting, when you loose H+ ions-- called metabolic alkalosis. Also respiratory alkalosis could be a result of hypervetilation ( for example, panic attack) when patient looses CO2.

high ph means the patient blood is alkaline and, there is an alkalosis since your data is limited we cannot determne if its respiratory or metabolic alkalosis.. but infection or bacterimia is often the underlying cause of alkalosis.
hope i help!!

If the pH is high it means that there is very low concentration of Hydrogen ions or none at all.

It's a measure of acidity or alkalinity, but I can't recall which of the two a high number indicates.

pH is a scale that goes from 0 to 14. it measures The concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution ; 7 is neutral, anything above 7.0 is acidic, anything below 7.0 is alkaline. here are some great sites:
