I drove home tonight and the 4X4 hi and low light flashed every five minutes, i did not turn the button on. do you think my transmission is going?

Most likely it is a problem with the transfer case solenoid. They are known to be a problem on Explorers. Either the ground is bad on the wiring or you need the solenoid that shifts the transfer case replaced.

It has nothing to do with your transmission!

your trans is OK, as long that it doesn't accidentally shift to 4x4low ,,because you will have a problem shifting it back to 4x4 high

there is a shift motor on your transfer case rear side with a bunch of wire connected to it, this motor shift the transfer case on demand ,,it has sensor in it to tell the module
whether its on low or high, usually there is a loose connection on the sensor,causing the module to tell you true the light that there is something wrong with the system

only a tech could really verify whats wrong with your car
