I am helping my father look for a new job.

My father can't retire right now but he needs a job with benefits. I have been helping him look for a job since he is scared of computers. He has construction experience but he really cant go back into that at his age. Any advice or encouragement will be greatly appreciated. I am very nervous for him because some companies wont even consider him because hes 62. I know thats illegal but obviously they will choose someone they assume is right for the job.

Home Depot and Lowes should be Hiring.... I saw Lots of ads for them in my Sundays help wanted ads. And since he has construction experience he would make a good fit.

With his experience in construction, my suggestion would be a construction supply company with retail, something like Fastenal or ABC Supply co.

My dad found himself in the same situation your dad is in. His background was automotive route sales, and he went to work at Auto Zone (also a good place for your dad).

As for the computer, my dad too had the same fear and this is how I approached it with him. I told him that he is one of the smartest people I know and then I told him that retail computers/cash registers are as easy to operate as calculators. And they are. Just tell him if he learned how to drive a front wheel drive car, or a calculator, or an ATM, he has enough base knowledge to learn how to run the simple computers at those type places.

Good luck to your dad, life is tough in America for many of us and our parents.

Have you looked at the position of 'People Greeter' at Wal-Mart? That is what they call the person at the front door that says hello, offers you a cart, and checks receipts. Unless policies have changed since I worked for them, senior citizens are preferred for this position. The work is not physically challenging beyond standing for long periods of time.

i think something like customer service job. like at walmart or even clean lobbies at local restaurants. when i worked at mcdonalds there was an elder lady that only cleaned the lobby for 30hours a week. it isn't much, but it will keep him occupied.
