Hi, thank you for reading my question. Me and my friends ambition is to join the Marine Corps. We have done anything possible to be able to qualify. The only thing that is wrong is that she is an immigrant. She has been here for 9 years. Do you need to be a United States citizen to be able to be one of the few and the proud? Please, help me. Thank you so much.

I know this answer pretty well considering we had a Korean that was deployed with us to Iraq. He became a US citizen after he already joined.

So, no you do not need to be a citizen to join, but you will become one once you join. If your friend doesn't want to be a citizen then they shouldn't enlist, otherwise GOOD LUCK!

I don't think you have to be a citizen. Any person who serves honerably in our military would be welcomed to become a United States citizen as far as i am concerned.

For now, you must have a green card.

In the future I wouldn't be surprised that illegal's can serve in the military for a gauranteed US citizenship for themselves + family.

9 years and she's never applied for citizenship? Why not? She'll probably have to be a citizen first. Call your local recruiter's office and ask. If so, she can then check out the following website to apply to be a citizen:
