Some toothpastes use an abrasive and say that they "get your teeth their natural whitest" Meaning they remove surface stains (which most people don't have alot of...they're just removing enamel, thus over time, yellowing teeth). The abrasives can be a number of things: silicon dioxide, silicate, pumice, etc.
All bleaches, toothpaste or other dental product, use hydrogen peroxide. This actually causes the teeth to lighten chemically by exposing them to oxygen
