The way not to do it is starve yourself, to start with. Just exercise and eat right. I did....lost 90 LBS because of it. Starving yourself won't help at all. Drink more water, eat less before bed, and don't eat for stress are the 3 things I follow and i'm going pretty well if i don't say myself. 90 LBS isn't anything like 5-10lbs so take my advice. It depends on how much you currently weigh. If you want to lose weight the healthy way reduce your calories based on your current weight and adjust when your weight does:
200 +lbs 2,000 cals a day
199- 170 lbs 1600 cals a day
169 and under 1200 cals a day
Make sure you are eating good healthy food. Don't be scared you can still eat pizza and hamburgers you just need to make them at home so you know what is going into them. Substitute lean turkey or chicken for beef
Whole wheat instead of white flour
whole grain pastas
Lots of vegetables
fruits
and drink as much water as you can stand.
You also need to get active. Start walking and work up to jogging. Try to get at least 50 mins of activity 5 or more days a week. The weight will start to melt off your body and you will feel great.

Without knowing your height and weight at this point, the only thing I can do is estimate. 1,500 calories per day is the usual amount for a diet. It can increase for men, and for active females to about 2,000 per day. If you are not able to exercise right now, even walking every day is a good start. Then, as you lose weight, you can become more active in your exercise. Weight Watchers is a very healthy program. The menus are balanced and you can get the recipe book to help you learn how to cook meals that are lower in calories. It would be good for you to go to Weight Watchers meetings, because you get weighed once a week, and everyone makes a very big fuss when you lose some weight. It is very good to have the support of other people who are trying to lose weight. I wish you the very best of luck.

It sounds like you really don't need to loose weight. Maybe instead of dieting, you should focus that energy on becoming "healthier." I don't think someone so young should focus on counting calories. You're a teenager, focus on eating as healthy as you can and that will change how you feel. I am a strong fruit and vegetable advocate. When you're hungry, don't eat a sandwich or potato chips, eat baby carrots and fresh bell peppers. Little stuff like that will completely overhaul your body. After 2-3 weeks eating mostly vegetables and fruit, you just feel sooooo much better. If all you want is to feel better in your dance outfit, vegetables are the way to go. Plus, they give you more energy and they're negative calories. That means you burn more calories eating them then they have in them. So, remember, vegetables=happiness.

You can safely eat 1200-1500 healthy calories while losing weight. You need to eat 2000 calories to maintain, as, without exercise, people lose approximately 2000 calories through everyday activities. 1200-1500 calories is a safe way to do it, and under that is considered undereating and undernourishing.

you need to eat fewer calories than you are burning its a simple method i just read something that says that if you eat a fruit such as an apple 15 min before lunch you'll consume fewer calories too. Don't count calories just eat healthy dont eat a lot kno when ur full and try to exercise. It worked for me. Also i'm sure you're not as big as you think. Plus it doesnt matter what you look like on the outside as long as ur beautiful on the inside!!!

depends on how tall are you. but most likely if you eat 1,200 cals a day, you'll loose weight. the magazine diets often say eat only 1,000, but with only 1, 000 cals a day you'll also loose muscle mass, and bone, and you dont want that. the more muscle you have the much more fat you burn.
i'd recomend starting a light weight training program, eating 1,200 cals a day, drinking a whole gallon of water a day, and walking for at least half an hour, preferably a whole hour a day. that's a good start on the road to weight loss!!!!!!!!!!!
