well my whole family's russian, and yet they cant help me. they're useless pieces of ****! so ive come to yahoo answers with my problem... so tomorrow i got a russian final. my teacher's gona give us words to write and she didnt tell us what they were gona be(all other times she did) anyway... i need to know the rule or w.e for when to put the soft sign and when not to, same with the hard sign.

i really dont wana fail this, i got a pretty low mark for my first term, and im pretty pised that no one can help me with such a simple question!

Well, can you tell the difference between the soft and hard versions of the sounds? If you can, it shouldn't be too much trouble. Some particular cases that you should memorize are:
-feminine nouns that end in ч, ш, щ (ex. : ночь, мышь, вещь)
-reflexive verbs (ones that end in "ся") that answer the questions "что делать?" or "что сделать?" (ex: что делать? мыться (even though the ться is pronounced ца))
-the hard sign is needed when you DON'T want the previous letter softened (подъезд - the ъ is there so that д can keep the hard sound)

P.S. - Why can't your family help you? Are they illiterate?

The soft sign is at the end of the infinitive of
most verbs.
Ex: pisat' = to write.
Other than that you just have to memorise the
words with these symbols.
