All of the above - it depends on the dish, my mood, and who I'm cooking for! Mostly, it's 3 - but I have been cooking since I was young and love to do it.

Some things I follow a recipe. Eventually I'll memorize the recipe, but that doesn't mean it'll stay memorized if I don't make it for a while.

Some things are best to just wing it. Although it is funny when they ask you for a recipe and you give them a blank look.

For baking, I follow a recipe - even if I've made it a hundred times so I make sure I get the proper amounts of the ingredients. With baking, the measurements make a difference!

For cooking, it's a combination dependent upon the meal. And if I'm trying a new recipe, I follow it closely the first time and then decide what I want to change the second time.

I just wing it, and depending on my mood my decide to change things around. It makes cooking more exciting. On the hand however I do not like it when my Mom changes a recipe. It has to be the same from my childhood or it does not taste as good.

I don't care how well I know the recipe...I always pull out the printed recipe and look at it while I cook.

I am so great at forgetting ingredients when I "wing it".

When I started cooking I used recipes until I learned to judge spice quantities and flavors. Now each creation is a new experience. Most of my meals are variations of a recipe I learned while cooking professionally.

Most of what I cook is memorized. I have done the dishes so many times that I know them by heart.

if im having a strange craving or idea, i experiment (good or bad i still tried), but mostly i go to epicurious.com (they have recipes from gourmet and bon appetit), find an interesting recipe, and change it before or as i go, suiting it to my taste. rarely do i follow a recipe perfectly, bc i feel it is not a dish "i" have made. and most recipes are suited to appease the masses - change it to fit you :)!
