The Catholic church would not allow him to divorce his wife, Catherine. And I agree with Bettie- Anne Boleyn probably had more to do with it than his assertion that he had second thoughts about marrying his brother's widow (Catherine).
The new Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, was willing to grant the divorce. The result of this was to split the Church in England away from the authority of the Pope. And in turn Henry was declared to be the "Supreme Head" of the English Church.

Henry VIII was a pig! He married Catherine of Aragon, but she couldn't bear a son, so he left her for Anne Boleyn, the much younger lady-in-waiting. The Catholic Church wouldn't let him divorce Catherine, so he decided to start his own church. Anne was beheaded (I think it was for treason) and Henry had four more wives after that, the last one outliving him. Then, his daughter, Mary, was queen. Then Elizabeth I took over and slaughtered thousands of Catholics living in Britain and Ireland with the help of Oliver Cromwell.

Essentially, cuz the Catholic Church would not allow his to divorce his first wife. He majorily had the 'hots' for Anne Boline, but she would NOT be merely his mistress. She wouldn't 'put out' unless she hada ring on her finger.
