I'm an elementary school teacher and the list I could give you is enormous, and only about a third of it would be focused on academics. But here is a few of my ideas, not academically based.
1) Respect-for self and others. Whether it be personal or respect for property children really do lack it. Its very sad because when I was a kid, my parents would beat my butt (or on one occasion slap my mouth) for the disrespect the children show these days, including my own children on occassion. It's not entirely the fault of the parent. With the way society has changed, "spare the rod, spoil the child" is no longer an acceptable form of punishment. All the babies of the baby boomers have really tied the hands of parents over the whole discipline issue.
2) A sense of caring: Kids no longer care. Nothing is important enough to many of them that they just don't care one way or another about what does/could happen. They are so much into instant gratification that they don't care what could happen as long as they get their way....right now.
3) Because of number two, children do not "learn" by the consequences of their actions...because they don't care about the consequences.
4) See number two again: They seriously lack in Compassion, again because they really just don't care enough about anyone besides themselves to try to understand and be compassionate.
Humility, Loyalty, Common Sense, but most importantly......Tolerance and Unconditional Love.....You can't learn something you're not shown in the first place. I see many of our children today behave as if they feel like they are a burden....and this is very sad indeed. These babies are our future. If you think GW is bad...imagine what it could be like if we don't start teaching our children how to be DECENT human beings BEFORE we teach them anything else

They are failing to teach them that they are responsible for their own actions and that there are consequences .I think that is the biggest one. Also table manners, a good work ethic, how to show respect, to take pride in their work, to work hard for what they want, that they are not the only ones that matter, how to show empathy, to be their own person and not follow the crowd, the difference between right and wrong and how to be responsible so that one day they can take care of themselves. I know there is more but that is all I can come up with at the moment.

To pay attention as a deliberate act of will, to consciously concentrate your attention on something that is basically uninteresting. School and work are not going to be like television and computer, "ripping off" your attention every few seconds. Paying attention is learned skill that most parents aren't teaching. I suspect the reason to be that most parents are between 18 and 30 and aren't very good at paying attention themselves.
The other side of the coin is to learn patience. There will be times when there is no entertainment and distraction. Learn to simply do nothing, to simply wait. We must be patient in order to be careful. Being in a hurry is the opposite of being careful, it is thinking about what you want to do next instead of what you are doing right now -- not caring anymore, not being care-full. You can't acheive excellence without care. Again, I suspect that parents aren't teaching patience because they don't understand or value it themselves.

How to cook. I think parents are too busy to cook everyday, and feed their kids mac and cheese, or pizza way too much. Kids should get involved with meal planning and preparation. In the old days, kids not only helped prepare meals, they helped harvest the food and pick it from the ground! The least we can do is give our children the important life lesson on how to cook a tasty meal.

Respect of others, some parents fail to correct thier children and the language some of them use now days and to think that when we get old(er), those kids are going to be running the country, scary, huh? Some kids need to care about others and not just themselves.

I think a lot of parents are really lacking to discipline their children. I see more and more young parents letting their kids get away with anything right in front of their eyes.
As a result.. any number of things can go wrong in the future.. especially when they hit teens.

I think kids dont know how to cope with disappointment in life. it comes right down to instant gratification for everyone. We live in an instant world, we want info we hop on the computer, we need to talk to someone we call all numbers until we get them and if not we will text/email them.
I try to think about how my parenting will effect my children in the long run. I want my children to be mature functioning adults, not spoiled big kids.

I would say respect. My kids know not to talk back to adults. Or anybody that is. I would also have to say there eating habits. Parents get so frustrated with there kids that they give them Mcdonalds to shut them up. That is SO WRONG!! I let my kids have Mcd's when they are good and deserve it. So many kids are overweight and there parents don't care!! That is b.s.

How precious time can be. Instead of sitting around playing Wii or watching TV, they should be playing outside with other children. Or getting to know someone like their grandparents or an aunt or uncle.
