It takes a long time to develop the skill needed to get the big bucks.

You have to be very good and have a good work ethic. Location is paramount - let's face it, if they can't find you, how will you build up a client base? Word of mouth (reputation) is most important but you have to start somewhere.

The key, I believe, to success is to start with an apprenticeship with a reputable artist.

yes you can. but it all depends on your talent and your personality. people like to go to tattoo artists they feel they can easily trust, and if you are good at what you do it makes people want more. tattoos are very addicting if your satisfied with the first one. if people like your work they talk and that will in the end bring more customers.

If you're really good and have a light touch, yes.

A friend of mine is that way, and has his appointment book filled through next summer. No joke.
