We just bought a sofa and there is an option of $150 fabric protection called "duraguard" or something similar, though it is NOT scothguard. It also comes with a 5 year scratch, tear, and stain warranty. If I can get scotchguard for $8 a can, is there really an added benfit to the product they want me to buy or are they trying to fatten their commission with an overpriced add-on?

I worked in the furniture industry for a number of years. If you are offered a fabric protection that is injected into the fabric, yes it is worth it. Scotchguard means nothing. It is a spray on that as soon as you clean it, it is gone unless you yourself spray it on again. An injected protector means that you can have a spill or stain you cannot get out, they will clean it for you at their expense or replace your piece. Have been there and had a replacement piece even after one month of ownership. Have a discussion with your furniture store about their fabric protection and what it will do for you. But never choose Scotchguard over an injection process.

Personally all those chemicals on the furniture does not seem like a good idea.
