I recently picked up a Diesel magazine and they rated the "Cummins" as the most reliable Diesel, with Fords "PowerStroke on the bottom especially their 6.0 Liter Engine..GMC's Duramax was in the middle

The Cummins is the best diesel engine to go into a light duty pickup, period. The 7.3 is pretty close, but in terms of longevity in most cases the I6 design will outlast a V-design. I have seen high mile PSD's, but there seem to be very few beyond 500k, even though there were a lot more made. I've seen and heard of tons of 500, 600, 750+, and even a million mile 5.9 Cummins. It's too bad Ford didn't get the Cummins, they would dominate the market so bad I don't think Dodge or Chevy could keep up.
I owned a 7.3, it was a great truck and engine but mileage was never more than 17-18 at best. I drive very, very conservatively and average 22+ in my 03 5 speed 5.9, and see 24+ on the highway most of the time. My current tank is getting 25.3, calculating after a half tank of use....and yes, that's hand calculated.

Like one of the other responses, I've owned both a Dodge 2500 with the Cummins and a Ford F250 with the Power Stroke. The Dodge was a stick-shift and the Ford was an automatic, so keep that in mind. That said, I much preferred the Dodge. Both would haul pretty much anything. The Ford had the horsepower, but the Dodge was the clear winner in torque and yes, fuel mileage. Never had a problem with the Cummins. The newer Power Strokes (2004-on) have had a lot of problems, from what I've heard.
By all means, if you want a diesel pickup, buy the Dodge - you won't regret it.

I drove a 97 ford power stroke ( thats what got me into diesel vehicles ) with the company I worked for at the time and I drove the hell out of it and in 3 years put over 120000 miles on it. the only problem I had was the turbo that went bad. Then I owned a 96 Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins and put over 220000 miles on it, The only problem I had was the tranny ( of couse, dodge ) but other than that, It ran smooth. I love the looks of a super duty ford, but I prefer the cummins over it just because the straight 6 its a lot simpler and stronger than the V8. May be the new 6.4L power stroke is better than the new 6.7 cummins but if you want a very reliable and best fuel efficient diesel engine I would recomend you to get a 5.9 Cummins

Definately the Cummins. I work on a dairy farm and deal with trucks all day hauling all types of heavy equipment. We have with a 97 F-350 diesel and an 01 Dodge 3500 Cummins 5sp. and the Dodge definately will do laps around the Ford, even under heavy load. Definately go with the Dodge Cummins over the Powerstroke, you will not regret it. Go with a late 90's Dodge 1 ton with the Cummins and five speed manual if you want my opinion.

I have owned both the cummins and the 7.3 Ford and I'm sorry but I won't even consider the Isuzu gm diesel. The Ford seems a little more powerfull but the fuel mpg is much worse than the Cummins. Also with the Ford I've had way more mechanical issues. Both will pull more than a pickup should but I would have to say the cummins is by far the better motor.I've found both the transmission and the rearend to also be better in the dodge over the Ford.Interior wise the Ford holds up better.

cummins is by far the best diesel engine on the market. the truck is awesome, and the whole powertrain is bullet proof. cummins, mercedes 6 speed, and a 10 1/2 or 11 1/2 inch american axle.

When it comes to a Diesel, get a Cummins. Don't even play around with GM's jap job Duramax.
