My husband (who is retired) wanted a cat so we decided to go through a rescue group. Long story short, we were talked into adopting a particular cat who PEED on our be a week or so after the adoption. We returned her to the group & asked if we could adopt our first choice but were told no AND that we could not get our money back either. Is there anything we can do? I feel she has probably done this before. Now my husband says he doesn't even want to adopt another cat. I am sick and furious with this woman who refuses to even try and work anything out with us. PLEASE HELP!!!

The point of rescues is to make sure the animals have been checked out by a vet, vaccinated and neutered. Also to see if their are any health or behavior issues that a potential adopter should be aware of. Supposedly that was all part of the 85.00 fee. This cat had obviously exhibited this behavior prior to our adopting her and we should have been told. BTW Jessica, we have two rescued dogs that have been with us 6 & 7 yrs respectively and a cat we rescued 17 years ago who is still healthy & happy. We don't "dump" animals quickly. The woman at the group had all of this information from us. Anything else?

fatherfrancis67's it's a shame you can come up with such a disrespectful and ignorant comment. If you had further questions, perhaps you should have asked them before shooting off such garbage. No wonder you don't accept emails. Afraid to stand up for your comments one on one? Shame on you.

Doesn't sound like there's anything you can do. Just go elsewhere. No guarantees on the behavior of people or cats. Sounds like you were pushed and these people certainly aren't being nice, but you made the decision.

No... The adoption fee is not to screen animals for this behavior. Do you have that in writing? If not, it's just some BS you made up off the top of your head!!! Many animals are dropped off without this info and are kept in a cage. How would they know? If they are a shelter that pledges not to destroy animals... They have absolutely no choice but to try very hard to get rid of any animal they have through adoption. When's the last time you bought a used car and the salesman told you all the reasons he wouldn't buy it? Buyer beware!!! If you don't discuss a warranty or trial period... This is the real world... you won't get one. The truth is... They had to con you into taking this cat because most people would know better. Right? If anyone ever proves the shelter knew something about the cat and lied, they'd have a case. Almost impossible to prove. Doesn't even sound like you asked!!! You didn't make a deal about returning the cat if it didn't work out!!!

Never adopt a cat that wasn't spayed or neutered at the appropriate age. They will "spray". "Spraying" on your bed was probably a compliment if that helps...

Get a kitten and take care of business at the appropriate age and chances of having a great pet are almost 100%. Assure your husband it will be worth it to try again with a kitten. Cats are awesome, clean and easy to care for pets 99% of the time. Unfortunately, if they're not properly taken care of and develop bad habits... little can usually be done.

Most kittens are born in the spring or summer. You'd have a better chance of finding one in a shelter then. Not impossible at other times of the year though. Some pet stores sell mixed-breed kittens at very reasonable prices and include a first vet visit. At the very minimum, I'd recommend getting a kitten checked for worms and ear mites (very common).... Getting the first round or two of shots... Getting the kitten spayed or neutered at the appropriate age. If the cat will be going outdoors, I'd keep up on the shots. De-clawing can be a good thing too. Many cats will tend to tear things up sharpening their claws otherwise. Some people say it's cruel... I say it's not much to ask compared to what people have to go through to live in a nice home...

Did you have the cat checked for a Urinary tract infection or a kidney problem? A lot of the time if a cat is turned into a rescue for a litter box issue (one of the top 3 reason a cat is surrendered) it's b/c the owners did not want to spend the money to take it to the vet for some simple antibiotics to fix the problem. If the rescue you went through did not check the cat, it could still have been going on, and by that point become a behavioral issue (gotten used to peeing outside the litter box since it associated it with the pain of having to urinate). If you didn't, I think you prematurely got rid of the cat instead of fixing the problem. I don't think it's right either that they wouldn't let you adopt the cat of your choice to begin with or refund it if it was less than a week.

Really, if people would STOP dumping cats that do this on shelters, there would not be this problem. I am sure this cat was doing this before and was given up for that reason!! Happens all the time. And if shelters would accept that these have to be euthanized, or at least NOT adopted out, people might stop using shelter to dump their cats with toileting issues!!!
Makes me really mad. I work at a shelter and we get at least 10 calls weekly from people that want us to take their cats because they use some part of the house or beds as the litterbox. They don't want the cat, and they do not want to be the "bad" person and euthanize it! So...dump it at the shelter!!!!
They should give you your money back. I would NOT adopt another cat from them.
Then, get a kitten so you know it didn't have some bad habits before you got it.

I wouldn't want any cats to be adopted by people who would easly dump them back into shelters just like that.

If it has a peeing problem- it might be due to some UTI problem. You should of given it a chance and had it taken to the vet. Problem solved. Shelters can not guarantee the health of their animals. No, I don't think you should get your money back.

GUYS AND GIRLS! i KNOW you are all feeling very strongly about this and I am too, but you do not need to tell her that she dumped that kitten so quickly, you don't know what position she might have been in.Tell her you are prepared to go to court with this if she does not give you back your money and let you choose the first cat you chose.
