I have taken care of my nephew though never had full custody. As wonderfully behaved that he is, I'd had to place him in 'time-out' before though it was fine because it is only helping the child in the end to learn about boundaries and consequences. I make sure that I am a very positive person in his life since 'it takes a village to raise a child' which happens to be a book written by former first lady and senator hillary clinton. I really do believe that to raise an adjusted, happy child, that it must be a collaborative effort among family and extended family.
