If you are looking for ideas, I have a pretty neat custom headboard that I built from an old, solid wood, exterior door. It was about 100 years old, salvage from a demolished house. I stripped all the old finish off, trimmed the top and bottom to even it out and re-finished it, and then mounted it horizontally on the wall above the bed.

I made ours using particle board as a base. Then putting foam, then batting then covering with fabric and stapling it into place.
It is lovely and different and comfortable ( and was easy)
