We are having a Halloween Dessert contest at work and i wanted to make caramel apples. But I want to make them Trick Candy Apples. ( you know like trick or treat )
The only 2 ideas I have for tricks are something unexpectedly gross like seaweed around it or an unexpected spice. like curry.
But it is a taste contest so my other idea is instead of apples, put popcorn balls on sticks so that's the trick that it's not an apple.
Any advice or ideas?

What about ripe peaches or nectarines,they will look more like apples ,when they bite into them all the juice will spill out.Even bananas peeled and rolled into balls then covered in caramel will be a surprise.

I like your idea of caramel covered popcorn balls. I was at a country store on Sunday and actually saw one. I couldn't believe the label said it was a caramel popcorn ball instead of a caramel apple. It was even complete with some nuts around the lower half!
I would keep the tricks edible rather than disgusting!
