That dispute will not end until Jesus comes back.
Proverbs 21:When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge.

Yes i aggree that studying history does uncover the truth, i see the biggest problem though is that militant people of faith will defend any discrepencies between the facts of history and the dogma of faith. and they rarely listen to any possiblility that something is incorrect.
so its not a matter of finding the truth to resolve disputes, its getting through to the zealots.
A point about history books the bible was written after the fact. the new testament was written between 100-300 Ad, isnt that a history book too?
Isaiah, so making someone sinful, who says different from you is the best policy. If thats the case we would still think the earth is flat.

Not by itself. "A particular manifestation of evil in human history cannot be regarded as the source of a general evil inclination". The particularities of history can only point us to specific evils or specific goods. It can't answer HOW these things arose. That requires a metaphysic, or transcendent viewpoint, which can stand sufficiently outside of history in order to judge it.
Peace to you.

As long as you remember that history is written by the victors in any dispute, that many of them were just plain wrong, and that new discoveries and technology can change everything.

Nah. There'll always be some religious nut who believes it just cause he or she believes it, and is immune to the evidence...
I don't know what evidence you've seen, but you've seen any genuine evidence then you would no longer be a Christian.

No, because people will continue to believe as they wish...and will resolve ambiguities in their favor.
