It started the first time that there was a visible minority. When that was is the real question. My guess would be about 4000 years ago.....give or take.

Racism is always based on fear. Fear of change. Fear another group will take over. Confident and brave people are never racists.
There was discrimination against Chinese people in Canada, when they started to arrive in large numbers. Now they are accepted, except by the ignorant minority who live in the wrong century and will never change.
Same with people from India.
When I was a kid in the 50's, Canada accepted quite a few displaced persons from the war in Europe. I remember "DP' being used as an insult for anyone stupid or incompetent--until my dad found out we were talking that way and hit the roof.

People began to discriminate against visible minorities when they realized the difficulties of discriminating against the invisible ones.
Seriously, discrimination exists in the animal kingdom, so I'm sure it's about as old as dirt. At least we don't bark.

I think it started when a cave man noticed the guy next to him had more body hair. Soon everyone avoided the hairy man. The point is discrimination starts with differences in people.

There has been descrimination and xenophobia throughout history, we can only speculate as to it's origins. If you're into evolution, for instance, it may have been an adaptive trait that re-inforced family and tribal bonds, or that allowed different bands of early humans to compete for scarce resources, while retaining the benefits of cooperation within the group.
