Absolutely. There are many factors which can influence long term survival including how severe the cancer is and how well it is controlled. When caught early, the five year prognosis is excellent. The later it is caught, if it has spread or is poorly controlled can all point to a poorer prognosis. Breast cancer, while potentially fatal (as with all cancers), is still beatable thanks to better screening, better research and an energized population advocating awareness. Cheers!

It depends on what type of breast cancer it is. In general, any long-standing, untreated cancer can spread to the lymph nodes or other organs and cause a number of complications. However, there is a form of breast cancer called breast cancer in situ, or ductal carcinoma in situ, whic is not invasive and does not spread outside of the duct. It is not life threatning but it can invade the tissues within the duct so treatment is needed and can be treated surgically using a procedure called a lumpectomy, in which the tumor is removed, or a mastectomy, in which the entire affected breast is removed.
