See if any of the following sound familiar:
1. Costochondritis. Common cause of "rib pain". Literally "rib cartilage inflammation." The blue areas in this image http://services.epnet.com/GetImage.aspx/getImage.aspx?ImageIID=6141 become inflamed and can hurt; it may hurt worse when you breathe. Read about costochondritis at
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/costochondritis/DS00626
2. Pleurisy. Inflammation of the lining around the lungs. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pleurisy/DS00244
3. As another poster suggested, a GI disorder. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) can cause pain in this area. Read about GERD at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gerd/DS00967
Other less likely possibilities may be a hiatal hernia, irritable bowel syndrome (if the pain is deep and not just "on the surface"), and a respiratory infection. It isn't likely that this pain is cardiac in origin, since you don't list any other symptoms other than occasional rib pain.
If you're having chronic symptoms with this, such as fever, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal rigidity, unusual stools (tarry or coffee-ground-like), you may want to see your physician.
Exactly what's in there? See http://wps.prenhall.com/wps/media/objects/969/993167/Toolbox_pdfs/Chapter11/digestive_system.jpg for help.

I had something like that once. It used to drive me mad. Did'nt make much difference whether I had just woken up and drank some water or eaten something rich. I thought it was indigestion but when I went to the doctor (revelation), he told me it was probably the start of a stomach ulcer. He prescribed some medication (can't remember the name now) and within a couple of weeks I was right as rain. Never had it again. Why don't you try asking your doctor? You never know, he may have a solution!

Could be trapped wind. Sip some warm water and rub the area gently. Go to the doctors if symptoms carry on.

I get that sometimes, it's like my lungs are sticking to my rib cage or something. It helps if I stretch my torso out by putting my arms in the air and stretching back.

Near or close to the side of your chest? It's probably gas working its way through your large intestine.
