Not all oak trees are the same. I believe they are called live oaks (entirely different tree) because they do not shed their leaves in the winter.

Some oaks are adapted to warm climates so do not go dormant seasonally. To differentiate them from more temperate oaks they are referred to as live. Their range is south of the 42 F geothermal line. If one was planted north of that line it would suffer frost damage or die.

"Live" oaks are evergreen.

So they look alive even when other oaks have lost their leaves and look "dead."

Live oaks are a certain kind of sub-tropical/tropical trees, as opposed to, say, white or red oaks that are found in cooler areas (they're deciduous.)

It is because they are still green and "live" in the winter, where as other trees are leafless and look dead during that time.
