When ever I go up to Rochester New York to visit family, I always get strange looks when I put mustard on my hamburger. My Grandfather always says "ketchup or mayo is for hamburgers and mustard is for hot dogs." I'm talking about yellow mustard, not grey poupon or dijion mustard like what my parents do. Now that's strange! Yellow mustard and dill pickles give hamburgers a zesty taste. I don't think ketchup and mayo is strange. I'm not fond of mayo but sometimes I'll have ketchup on my hamburger.

That's interesting... It must be a Northern NY thing.

Mustard and pickles are a typical hamburger condiment.

In fact a typical McD's hamburger has pickles, ketchup, mustard and onions.

McD's is over a bazillion served all over the world... lol.

Ha Ha, Funny you should mention this.

I'm from Rochester and the "Norm" for burgers up here is Ketchup and Onions and Mayo. But when you get a burger from McDonald's or Burger King there is mustard and pickles on them. I guess you like what you like, so who cares :-)

Down South, we put coleslaw and chili on our hamburgers, and whatever other condiment whether it be ketchup, mustard, mayo. Some people prefer lettuce, tomato and pickles. Its all in what you grew up eating and liking. We also eat "red" Jesse Jones hotdogs with coleslaw and chili, onions, ketchup. Up north they eat those beefy links with the skin on em (yuk). They also use different kinda hotdog buns up north. So it varies from region to region.

Probably the same reason that people from the south think it's strange to put ketchup on fried eggs, it just never occurred to them. My roommate in Indiana thought fried green tomatoes was just a movie and my boss told her that it was an old Southern dish. Last time I spoke with her, she still prepares green tomatoes like I taught her on occasion; and that's been 15 years ago.

Hello:

I am from Michigan and we pretty much put just about everything on a burger such as:

Ketchup
Mustard
Pickles
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Cheese
Onions

Our mustard is yellow mustard, our onions are vidalia onions and we use dill pickle chips on our burgers. I don't like mayo on my burgers either, ewww!

Not sure about Rochester, but we like mustard and pickle in Northern Indiana.

In Illinois they use mustard, ketchup, pickles, onions, cheese, mayo. It is really good.
Hot dogs are ketchup, mustard, pickle relish.

Never heard of this "Northern rule". Each geographic area of the country have their own way of doing things, but this is new to me. Have you heard about slicing tomatoes and serving with cream? Or salt on watermelon? How about fried potatoes with apple cider vinegar? or my favorite, baked macaroni & cheese topped with applesauce. See? it's different in every place.
