Thou shall not murder is more accurate. Killing is OK in certain situations like you said if someone was trying to kill you or blow up a plane, etc.

Yes. The Laws of Moses actually go into great detail about these laws. Think of the Ten Commandments as the table of contents, and there Moses was called to expand upon them as God had ordained. So many people miss that, cause they just look at the Table of Contents and point out their short-comings, never truly reading the texts and finding how much of a fool they make themselves out to be.

The Hebrew term is actually closer to the word murder in English. It excludes killing in self defense, so if you did kill somebody who tried to kill you, that would be fine.

no the good book does not afford the same rights as the American public has to 'defend oneself', that died with His Holiness the Christ's 'turn the other cheek/give him your cloak aswell/walk a mile' command
Moses taught 'an eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth', but Jesus said 'turn the other cheek'.
Americans has Mosaic rights not Christian rights (also the US 'Statue of Limitations' is adapted from Mose's law not Jesus')

The more literal translation is "thou shalt not murder" (instead of kill). Murder is the unjust taking of a life. If you are defending yourself, that is clearly justified.

If you kill someone and they bring you to court, saying it was self-defence will not keep you out of prison.

I don't adhere to the 10 commandments, but it's self-defense. I'm not exactly ready to die, and not for something stupid as stealing my television set.

Very rarely is killing, even in self-defence, actually necessary. Which makes any killing we see today, whether it be in crime or in war, truly tragic and immoral.
