With windows XP the product key has to match the machine unless you are an Authorized Dealer putting out and servicing machines. If you have a few PC's in the house make sure you are using the proper software.

It should put a toll free number on the screen, you call this number and they will validate it over the phone for you. I remember it says something about the " code for this product is no longer valid" Or the date has passed. Just ring the number. They tell you not to write it down but just to type it in. Write it down and save it for next time you have to do it.

If you phone Microsoft first, they will be able to help you validate it. XP is "dead" from their point of view so there is a good chance that you will get it done for free. The worst they will do is charge you for a key, so it's worth explaining the situation to them first.

An important thing to remember about product keys, passwords, etc., they are case sensitive, meaning if letters are CAPS, they must be entered in CAPS. If there's a "-" or a "space", you must enter a dash or a space.

I would venture to say that 90% of time, the reason behind product key failures, is that the user entered the wrong data, either numbers reversed, or incorrect case.

Possibly the code was used to load another computer. WHen you enter the code, it's checked at micro$oft and they determine it's a duplicate.

I had to call M$ when I added a new video card and another hard drive because the info at M$ did not match the computer I was reloading XP Pro on. just for the video card and hard drive.

I know why, a hacker had produced an code generator which had used your code by radom generation by typing an radom name. Just unlucky. Better go back and return this product.

Yea, sound's like the validation key is wrong. If you can prove it's a valid license . . call MS, otherwise download the hack.
