My schnauzer is 3 years old and weighs 22 pounds. He ate a whole pack of gum with xylotol in it, and we took him to the vet. The vet said he was fine, and I was relieved. What I'm wondering is, do chocolate, grapes, artificial sweetners, and ect. affect different dogs differently? Because I read countless articials on how xylotol can kill a dog, but the vet said my dog is perfectely fine.

i know grapes do... its just something that a LOT of dogs have a VERY bad reaction to. As for chocolate... bad all around.

something else i have saved in my phone for one of these "just in case" kind of things is a poison control hotline.

most will charge you, this one is 100% free.

Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It all depends on dose and then size of your dog. If you have any question you can always call the ASPCA Posion Control center they are the leading experts in animal posioning issues.
"Another toxin the ASPCA is cautioning owners about is xylitol. Xylitol is a sweetener found in certain sugar-free chewing gums, candies, and other products. According to the ASPCA veterinarians, dogs ingesting significant amounts of gums and candies containing xylitol may develop a sudden drop in blood glucose level resulting in depression, loss of consciousness, and seizures. After known ingestion of this chemical, it is important to get your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Although it is possible xylitol causes liver failure in dogs, this has not been proven and the mechanism of toxicity is still not known. It is important to realize products safe for humans are not always safe for pets. "-VIN Dr. Bob Judd

There is a lot of misinformation out there. If the vet said he is OK, he is OK
