During the "peak" days, we usually have to resort to "force feeding" meatballs of soft food and Nutri-Cal, mixed with some oatmeal for the right texture.
It is a pain and we do it only if weight loss is an issue at the time, because as I am sure you know, coat blowing will follow not eating for 6 days!!!!!
Generally, when we put the meatball in his mouth, he eats it. He just won't take the food from the bowl or even your hand. It is messy and not fun, but works.
We have one girl with a LONG cycle and he will stand for about 8-10 days....so we suffer in misery and make meatballs!!!!!!!
We keep LOTS of Nutri-Cal on hand too!!!!!!!!!

I think it likely that if you fed him home made food, he'd eat. There's excellent recipes in Dr. Pitcairn's book "the Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats". It also contains info on all the supplements you might want to give, including what they're good for.

Since I've been cooking for my 3, they've loved meal time and are thriving on the diet. (They eat about 80% home-made, and 20% Innova large breed.)

use puppy dry food- it had double the amount of fat than adult dry food and helps keep the weight on adult dogs that have a problem with maintaning a stable weight. I use 'supercoat puppy' which has 26% fat more than other brands. Also seperatehim from the rest of the dogs to feed. um also you can give him a can of sardiens in oil, which helps keep the coat shiny
