To a lesser extent Your dad is right, it was a war against the spread of communism . Many similarities exist between the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The main reason America fought each of these wars was to keep independent nations from succumbing to communist control. If America allowed soviets to take Korea and Vietnam, other parts of Asia would be at stake. Each case demonstrates a battle between democracy and communism. The Korean and Vietnam Wars were fought against an ideology, not an individual you can point your finger at.

Another similarity between Vietnam and Korea is that each of these nations became split between the communist north and democratic south. North Korea and North Vietnam were connected to communist China and received supplies, ammunition, and support from them. South Korea and South Vietnam on the other hand, favoured democracy. The United States gave weapons, supplies, and military advisors to South Korea and South Vietnam, which soon led to troops actually fighting in each of these wars

It was same war in the fact that it demonstrated the cold war stale mate between the Soviet Union and the United States .

Overally Vietnam and Korea wars differed greatly most of the facts highlighted by answers already provided .

By the way, is your dad a professor, I will understand where he is coming from .

Separate conflicts. However, some old die hards might see a connect between both wars as the fight against communism. While the UN was fighting against North Korean and Chinese forces in Korea, the French were engaged with Vietminh guerrillas in IndoChina.

The French were defeated in 1954, a year after the armistice in Korea. The United States sent military (and other) advisors in South Vietnam soon after. American combat troops entered Vietnam in 1965.

yes they are different- Vietnam War was fought in Vietnam
Korean War was fought in Korea
1945 - First American Died in Vietnam
1959 - first official Service Member death
1973 - Last American Leaves Vietnam

Korean war was in the 50's
15 Aug 45 - Korea divided into US and Soviet occupation zones along 38th parallel
27 Jun 50 - UN asks member countries to aid Republic of Korea - US announces intervention. North Korea attacks Seoul airfield
27 Jul 53 - Cease fire signed - fighting ends 12 hours later

They did overlap, but were Declared separately so technically different wars

EDIT: hmmm..curious..thumbs down for posting a historical time line..very interesting...not even an opinion, but an actual historical time line..this may be an all time low for YA

Tell dear old dad to simply look at a map or globe of the 2 areas. Honestly I would think the names give it away.

How old is your dad? 15?
Vietnam lasted from 1959-1975

Korean war was over in 1953 and started in 1950

They were fought for the same reason, however, to stop the spread of communism. They were both proxy wars.
