I've tried hard drives, cameras, web cams, etc, and they all crash the operating system immediately. The display doesn't turn off, it just freezes wherever it was. Control Panel says the ports are working, and I've reinstalled windows. It's a presario v5000 Any Ideas?

i reinstalled windows after it happened, so i can't do a restore (i tried one before the re-install, but it wouldn't let me). I just reset my startups to diagnostic mode and rebooted, but that didn't help either. the physical ports aren't damaged in any way, and they both respond in exactly the same way, which makes me think it's a software problem, but i can't think of anything else. where would i find drivers if i wanted to reinstall them? any other ideas? thanks for all the help!

You have probably installed a startup that is conflicting with USB. Try:
1. A system restore to the date when USB ports were working.
2. Disabling startups by running msconfig. Go to startup tab then disable all, apply, ok. PC will restart. If USB works, enable startups except the the most recently installed ones.
