Retinol is vitamin A and is used to improve skin texture. It can irritate skin - old & young and should not be used close to the eye area.
Use a bit less of this Neutrogena lotion and keep it away from your eye area. If you do not build up a tolerance then discontinue use completely.
" Retinol: Retinol is vitamin A. Carotene compounds (found, for example, in egg yolk, butter and cream) are gradually converted by the body to vitamin A (retinol). A form of vitamin A called retinal is responsible for transmitting light sensation in the retina of the eye. Deficiency of vitamin A leads to night blindness."

Retinol is a form of vitamin A. Consuming large quantities can be harmful, but applying it to the skin has not been found dangerous. If that ointment is hurting you then stop using it, there will be many chemicals in the stuff that could be causing you problems. You might be allergic to something, possibly even the retinol, just try different ointments until you find the right one for you.

That too has happened to me. Also, it burns around my nose/mouth area sometimes as well, but I take a highly concentrated form of retinol. Until my skin got used to it, i would use it only every other night for a while, then started nightly. I personally would't recommend putting it under the eyes, as that skin is very thin and retinol might be too strong. Instead, around the eyes, try a vitamin C serum. It is also anti-aging, but way more gentle. That is what I do. Good luck!

I have been prescribed Retinol @ 4%, but I have an oily skin.
It is an acid and obviously too strong for your skin type.

The less irritating form of retinol is 'retinyl palmitate'.
