I was recently approached by a painter who charges 5,000-7,000 for his paintings. He was struck by one of my photos and wants essentially to paint it.

Aside from receiving credit, I requested a percentage of the profits he will make from the painting. What do you think is a fair percentage? At this point I am thinking around 20%?

he owns galleries, so he will not be charged to display them.

You should be flattered that he liked your photo abilities and be happy to work with him. You and your family will always be able to say " that painting was done from my photograph"

What would you charge if you were going to sell a copy of the photograph to a friends??

I would ask the artist what he considers a reasonable fee. He knows what the photo is worth to him. He has a million other places he can look for inspiration without any payment. And what if he says "no" to you and you will never receive that recognition.

And 20% is very high. How about a flat fee that the two of you agree on and if he makes prints later you will get 5 or 10 copies of the print for yourself, that you can sell or give as gifts.

I think what's going to happen now is that he'll offer you a flat fee for the use of the image in this one painting. Hopefully you'll both come to an agreeable figure eventually. If he doesn't plan to do prints of this piece, it may be the last time you and he need to talk turkey.

But what makes you think that just because "he owns galleries" that that means it won't cost him anything to display them? He's responsible for all the overhead in every gallery. I think you may have an inflated idea of what "the profits" are here.

Hi,

I doubt that he'll give you 20%.
If you get 10%, that will be good.
Don't forget that he has to pay something usually between 20 to 40% to the gallery; if sold through a gallery, that is.
It's not everyday that one gets 500 or 700 dollars for a photo.
This is may personal opinion, but you have the final word.

Kind regards,

José

I'm gonna say start with 20. If he declines, go down to 15%.

It's not important. The painting will not sell anyway. Unless your mom buys it.
