I would say a little bit of both. My parents attempted to indoctrinate me when I was a teenager, but it didn't stick. It wasn't until I had my own unique experiences that I started to seek out the truth for myself.
The Bible does say for us not to lean on our own understanding, and I think that this is true. I also think that our experiences enable us to do that.
I work in a restaurant where servers carry their own bank. While I may trust my coworkers, I won't necessarily give them my bank to make change when I'm busy. Only a few of them have that right. The more I work with a person (experience) the more likely I am to allow them to make change out of my bank while I am busy (trust).
Trust is something that is required in order to have faith. I have to trust my coworkers not to steal me blind, and I have to trust God not to lead me down the wrong path. It takes time and experience to gain my trust in both cases.

experience can be good , but we are limited by our experiences- if we rely only on our own experience and understanding of the world then we are doing ourselves a huge disservice as well as those around us. You can say that your emphasis is on experience, but everyone in every aspect of life has to rely to a great degree (often greater than they choose to admit) on faith , doctrine, things passed down from one generation to the next. You cannot experience everything and often our experiences cause us to have a skewed view of things around us.
A child is born and is very intelligent, making straight As in school and understands things very easily, they get home from school and the parents are fighting, the child is continually told how stupid and worthless he is and how he wil never amount to anything, the child is often beaten and abused. Eventually this child truly believes he has no value, no one could love him and his accomplishments are of no worth.
Another child is born and is fed with a silver spoon, he becomes lazy and greedy, he believes he is God's greatest gift to creation and accomplishes nothing, believing that the world owes him , he continues to do nothing profitable but believes he hung the moon.
In both cases, the limited experiences of each child has caused their understanding of themselves and the world around them to be clouded and skewed, they do not have the truth and tend to make choices and behave according to the incorrect views they hold as a result of their experience
